Sorry I couldn’t think of a way to make this related to race and/or ethnicity. I’ll do better next time.
… wait. Um, one of the ways in which the state (and, has kind of only alluded to so far, all bureaucratic, centralizing organizations) makes social life legible is by imposing race and ethnicity labels to allow categorical analysis of its population. Better?
Slightly better. But who said it had to be about race/ethnicity? Brat.
